How to protect the edges of your consignments

Transport damage can cause high costs and thus considerably reduce profits in the company. To avoid costly returns, you should therefore place particular emphasis on the professional packaging of your goods. Edges and corners in particular tend to be damaged during transport. In the following, we will show you how you can adequately stabilise your shipping goods with suitable corner and edge protection and thus minimise unplanned costs in advance.

How an edge protector works

Edge protectors are attached to the outside corners of packaged goods to protect all edges and corners of pallets, individual cardboard boxes or even sensitive goods without cardboard packaging. The edge protectors are uncomplicated to apply, but it is necessary to fix them in the appropriate place to prevent unwanted slippage. The most common way to secure the edge protector in the desired place is to use stretch foil or to use PP, PET or steel strapping to fix it in place.

In addition, the matching edge protector helps you to protect your goods from being cut into by very tight strapping. For easy attachment, it is possible to use edge protectors with a mandrel as well as self-adhesive edge protectors and corners. Fragile goods such as expensive furniture can be individually secured with foam edge protectors.

Pallets need special stability

Regardless of whether they are sent as parcels or on pallets - when transporting goods, our products should arrive at the recipient in perfect condition. However, stacked and palletised packages are exposed to particular stresses. Edges and corners in particular are often affected by bruising and impact. It is therefore essential to secure the shipping pallets as a whole. Otherwise, when lifting the pallet with a forklift or transporting it with a delivery vehicle, there is a risk that the edges could be dented, torn or otherwise severely damaged. By securing the individual boxes together and protecting the edges, the load can be fully stabilised. This prevents it from falling apart and gives stacked pallets extra support.

Safety in transport traffic

But edge protection is not only important for protecting goods. It is also of decisive importance for safety in transport. Edge protectors are essential for securing loads.

In freight transport, the loads are usually lashed down with appropriate belts so that they cannot be displaced by the forces of movement that occur. On the one hand, the loads themselves are protected by the angles used, as the required high tensioning force of the lashing straps could otherwise cause considerable damage to the goods. On the other hand, edge protectors also protect the lashing straps themselves. Packages that have a sharp-edged or rough surface could otherwise cause damage to the strap and, in the worst case, tear it completely. In that case, the load would no longer be safe to transport.

The correct material is crucial

Edge protection is available in various materials. But whether foam, cardboard or plastic - each material has its optimal application purpose. Edge protection corners and profiles made of foam are particularly suitable directly on products that are not straight themselves. Their natural sponge-like structure helps them to deflect impacts without scratching or otherwise attacking sensitive surfaces. These are available in a variety of shapes so they can be selected to match the product.

Cardboard edge protectors are ideal for securing under strapping and stretch film to even out potential pressure points. They provide stability and strength to packages and pallets. Plastic edge protectors are the tool of choice to keep cardboard boxes from being cut by the strapping.

Plastic edge protectors are particularly suitable for fixing your PP and PET strapping. These are available with and without an integrated mandrel. If you want to use them on cardboard boxes, it is advantageous to choose variants with a mandrel. These can be easily inserted into the cardboard and are thus optimally protected against slipping. If you are protecting your goods with edge protectors without additional cardboard, you should choose the version without a spike to avoid scratches on your goods.
